Land project

Dear Priscillia and Amerlyn, can you tell me exactly what problem you are facing exactly? Isit the use of the glogster website or not knowing how to do the project?

A few of you have voiced today that you do not know how to do the project, here are some things that i am looking out for in the poster:

1. The different methods that Singapore government uses to increase more land space eg Reclaiming land, building vertically upwards...

2. Pictures of some examples

3. Explanation in your OWN WORDS (i can tell if you just copy and paste from the internet or text book!)

4. Give some advantages and disadvantages of the methods eg Environment impacts? Social impacts?

5. Reflection - What YOU think about this personally? Do you like it or not? Do you support this? Or do you have other suggestions for the singapore government?

I want you to summarize keywords, no need write long story. I love pictures and lotsa colours too!

3. What can they do in their farms to improve the outputs?
As for those of you that are doing up for your online poster for LAND, kudos to your efforts.. but im sorry if your work on glogster didnt get saved like ZM and JQ.. please kindly use scrapblog instead (or if you found some other cool sites to do online posters, do let me know too.. im flexible to your ideas)

Some questions from you...

Q1. Can we use the term 'perennial crops' to replace double/triple cropping? - Javier

Ans:

Perennial crops refers to plants that have long life span (at least a few years). Hence this type of crops does not need to be replanted after every harvest.

Double/triple cropping is the practise of growing more than 1 crop on the same land in the same season or at the same time. This reduces the growing time, and produces higher yield. The advantages are : Increased income and increase cash flow for farmers, and it maximises the land resource.

Q2. High technology farming uses artificial lighting. So is sunlight still an input? - Gerald

Ans:

Well some types of high tech farming uses artificial light to replace sunlight. However this is NOT for ALL of the high tech farms. Hence only for those farms with artificial light will WILL NOT uses sunlight as an input. Clear?

Q3. How does high tech farming benefit us?

Ans :
1. Saves space as it uses a small land area
2. Organic products are produced which are healthier for consumers
3. Environmentally friendly as soiless culture reduces the need for pesticides and herbicides
4. Efficient in the farm process due to usage of technology eg irrigation

What else can YOU think of?

Q4. Are organic products healthy? Then why do people who eat them every meal still have cancer? - Gin Wen

Ans : Yes organic products are healthy. The causes of cancer are due to many reasons other than diet. Other causes of cancer includes : Lifestyle, hereditary from family (Genes and DNA), Carinogens (Tobacco, arsenic, radiation, x-rays, the sun andcompounds in car exhaust fumes).... And so on.. hence there are many factors that leads to cancer..

Q5. What is the differences between bunds and terraces?

Terraces in wet rice cultivation are basically STEPS THAT ARE CUT INTO SLOPES to create more FLAT LAND that are suitable for farming.

However bunds are built by farmers at the edges of the fields to SEPARATE AND RETAIN water.

Lets think abit further... Can you come up with the answers to these questions?

1. What are some of the advantages of each type of farming?
2. Do you think farmers might change their type of farming? eg from Traditional wet rice to commercial?
3. What can they do in their farms to improve the outputs?
